Terms of use

Version 1 — effective 25 September 2026

These terms are the agreement between you and Potasse. They explain what you can expect from the service, what we expect from you, and — because it matters more than usual here — what happens to collections you publish.

1. Accepting these terms

By creating an account or using Potasse, you accept these terms. If you don't, please don't use the service. Using Potasse without an account (browsing the public catalog) is covered by the parts of these terms that apply to it.

2. Who runs Potasse

Potasse is a personal project, published by an individual on a non-professional basis. As French law allows in that case, the publisher's identity is not shown here; it has been given to the host, who can disclose it where the law requires. You can reach the publisher at contact@potasse.io.

The service is hosted by Vercel Inc., 440 N Barranca Ave #4133, Covina, CA 91723, USA. Its database is hosted by Neon, in Frankfurt, Germany (EU).

3. Your account

  • You must be at least 15 to create an account, or have the consent of a parent or guardian.
  • Give accurate information and keep your sign-in methods (password, passkeys, two-factor codes) to yourself. You are responsible for what happens under your account.
  • One person, one account. Accounts may not be created automatically.
  • Tell us at contact@potasse.io if you think someone else has access to your account.

4. The service

Potasse is a spaced-repetition flashcard app: you study collections of cards, and a scheduler decides when each card comes back.

  • Potasse is free. If that ever changes, it will not be retroactive, and paid features will be announced in advance.
  • We work to keep Potasse available and your data safe, but we can't guarantee uninterrupted service. Features may change, be added or be removed.
  • Scheduling is an estimate of your memory, not a promise of results.

5. Your content

Your content is what you put on Potasse: collections, cards, and anything imported. You keep all rights to it.

For a private collection, you let us store it, copy it and display it only as needed to run the service for you. Nobody else can see it.

6. Publishing a collection

Making a collection public lists it in the catalog, where anyone can study it. Other learners build their progress on its cards, so publishing works differently from everything else on Potasse. Read this section before you publish.

Publishing is permanent. A public collection can't be made private again or deleted — not by you, and not when you delete your account. If it could, everyone studying it would lose their progress overnight.

The licence you grant. When you publish, you grant Potasse and every Potasse user a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, perpetual and irrevocable licence to host, reproduce, display, format and study the collection's content within Potasse, and to add its cards to their own collections. You remain the owner. The licence covers Potasse only: it doesn't let anyone republish your content elsewhere.

What you can still do. You can keep editing a public collection. You can archive cards: an archived card stops being shown to anyone, while learners who studied it keep their history, and you can restore it later. You can't delete a card that a public collection lists.

How you are credited. A public collection shows its author's display name. It follows your name if you change it. If you delete your account, your public collections stay in the catalog and stay credited to the name you had then. Your account and everything else attached to it are deleted (§ 10).

Your choice about the credit. Keeping your name is based on your consent, given when you publish, and on our legitimate interest in crediting authors accurately (GDPR, art. 6(1)(a) and (f)). You can withdraw that consent or object at any time, before or after deleting your account: write to contact@potasse.io and we will replace your name with "Unknown" on all your public collections within one month. The collections themselves stay, under the licence above.

Only publish what you may publish. You confirm that you have the rights needed to grant this licence: the content is yours, or its licence allows it.

7. Importing content

You can import cards from other apps, such as Anki.

  • Import only content you are allowed to use. Shared decks written by other people are theirs: studying them privately is usually fine, but publishing them requires the author's permission or a licence that allows it.
  • Imported review history is attached to your account only. It is never shared with other users or published with a collection.

8. Acceptable use

Don't use Potasse to:

  • publish anything illegal, infringing (copyrighted material you have no rights to, trademarks, trade secrets), defamatory, hateful, harassing, violent, sexually explicit, or harmful to minors;
  • publish other people's personal data;
  • advertise, spam, or mislead;
  • upload malware, probe or overload the service, get around its security or rate limits, or access data that isn't yours;
  • scrape the service or copy the catalog in bulk by automated means.

9. Reports and moderation

Report content that breaks the law or these terms to contact@potasse.io. Say where it is (the collection's link) and why it's a problem. We review reports promptly and tell you what we decided.

We may remove content that breaks the law or these terms — including public collections and their cards, which is the one exception to § 6 — and suspend or close the accounts responsible. When we remove your content or restrict your account, we tell you why and how to contest the decision, unless the law forbids it. Contest by replying to our message; a person will review it.

10. Your data

How we handle personal data will be set out in a privacy policy, published before launch. In short:

  • You can download everything we store about you at any time, from Settings → Privacy.
  • Deleting your account, from the same page, deletes your account, sign-in methods, sessions, library, study history, settings, and private collections. Your public collections stay, as described in § 6.

11. Closing your account

You can delete your account at any time. We may suspend or close an account that seriously or repeatedly breaks these terms, after telling you why, or immediately where the law requires it or others are at risk.

12. Potasse's own content

The Potasse name and logo, the app and its design, and the collections credited to Potasse belong to us or our licensors. You may study them within Potasse; don't copy or republish them elsewhere without our permission.

13. Liability

Potasse is provided as is. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect loss, or for content written by other users. Nothing in these terms limits our liability for gross negligence or wilful misconduct, or removes rights you have as a consumer under the law.

14. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. For a material change, we will tell you by email or in the app at least 30 days before it takes effect. If you don't accept the new terms, you can delete your account before they apply. Continuing to use Potasse after that means you accept them.

Changes can never retroactively withdraw the licence in § 6 from learners, or widen it without your agreement.

15. Law and disputes

These terms are governed by French law. If you are a consumer living in another EU country, you also keep the protections of that country's mandatory law. Contact us first at contact@potasse.io; most problems are solved there. If that doesn't work, the competent courts are those designated by law.
